Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson on Thursday, June 30, 2022, became the U.S. Supreme Court's newest justice, a historic move that makes her the first Black woman to serve on the high court in its 232-year history (access Supreme Court press release).
The new justice took the oaths, administered by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Breyer, to become the institution's 116th justice. Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr., administered the Constitutional Oath and Associate Justice Stephen G. Breyer (Retired) administered the Judicial Oath.
The Senate voted in April to confirm then-Judge Jackson, who is the first former public defender to serve on the high court.
