The Investigator Playbook Series, Session 1: The Investigator Playbook Series: Laying the Groundwork for Effective Defense Investigation
This presentation covers the essential first steps a defense investigator should take when assigned a new case. From reviewing discovery materials to identifying and developing potential witnesses, we’ll outline key strategies that shape the early phase of the investigation. Topics include spotting investigative leads in discovery, collaborating effectively with attorneys and clients to set priorities, and techniques for locating, interviewing, and assessing witnesses. Tailored for investigators and paralegals, this session emphasizes practical tools, real-world examples, and foundational approaches that support a strong, client-centered defense from the outset.

Presenter(s)
Rená Ross, LICSW, PIP, is the Trial Unit Chief Investigator for the Federal Defender Office in the Middle District of Alabama. She has nearly three decades of experience in comprehensive fact investigation and clinical and forensic social work. Her work includes mitigation investigations, psychosocial assessments, and the supervision of investigative staff as well as undergraduate and graduate interns. Rena’ recently completed a six-month TDY with Defender Services, where she was assigned to the Program Operations Division and contributed to Federal Defender and CJA program review efforts. She is an active leader in the National Association of Social Workers, currently serving as President of the Alabama Chapter. In addition to her role at the Federal Defender Office, Rená is a frequent presenter on sentencing advocacy, mitigation, and client engagement and serves as an adjunct instructor in the Master of Social Work program at Troy University.
