Training Event Description

This presentation is about exploring creative approaches to reviewing and decoding not only the typical records gathered through scorched-earth discovery requests, but also those obtained from social media and digital devices. The presentation will highlight common issues and offer practical ideas for uncovering a more nuanced and compelling defense narrative.

Presenter(s)

Natalie Degrati, Senior Analyst, Office of the Federal Public Defender, Central District of California

Natalie joined the FPD in 2010 as an investigator in the Capital Habeas Unit, and years later transferred to the trial unit. She has extensive experience conducting fact and mitigation investigation and writing detailed social histories for a wide range of post-conviction and trial cases with charges related to complex fraud, drugs, guns, human trafficking, and death penalty eligible trial cases. Prior to joining the FPD, she earned her B.A. in Psychology at UC Berkeley, and later earned her M.S. in Special Education while teaching middle and high school students labeled with a range of mental health issues (including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety disorders, autism, history of trauma, etc.), as well as learning disabilities and cognitive impairments. This experience, a wealth of travel, and her background as a native Spanish speaker serve as a firm foundation for incorporating broad perspectives and creativity into her work.

We did not apply for CLE for this program. However, attendees will be provided a Certificate of Attendance for their records within 15-30 days of the broadcast, which may be used to self-apply for CLE, depending on the bar rules for your jurisdiction.
