Federal workers across the U.S. government received an email on Saturday evening asking them to account for what they did in the past week — and Elon Musk says they will lose their jobs if they don't respond.
The Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts said some judges and judiciary staff had received the email from the executive branch’s Office of Personnel Management. The judiciary office said they “suggest that no action be taken” (article available here.)
The emails to judges and federal court employees could represent an improper intrusion into the judiciary by the executive branch, in breach of the Constitution’s mandated separation of powers.
Officials at the departments of Defense, State, Homeland Security and Energy told workers not to respond to the email. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) staff were initially told to reply but then received a Sunday evening email asking them to "pause" responses pending additional guidance.
