Federal Defenders of San Diego, Inc., has been selected to receive a 2026 Bernard E. Witkin Award for Excellence in Legal Education, recognizing the office’s commitment to training and educating the legal community.
Presented by the San Diego Law Library Foundation, the Witkin Awards celebrate excellence and contributions to the legal community. This year’s recognition shines a light on something Federal Defenders and CJA community know well: the Federal Defenders of San Diego team’s generosity in sharing its knowledge, experience, and expertise.
The office’s Executive Director, Kasha Castillo, is a prolific trainer in the federal defender and Criminal Justice Act (CJA) communities, and members of the staff likewise devote considerable time and energy to educating and supporting defense professionals nationwide. Through trainings, presentations, and other educational efforts, they help defenders build their skills, deepen their understanding of federal practice, and better serve their clients.
That commitment to teaching reflects an important part of Defender Services Office's mission. The work of defending people accused of federal crimes demands skill, preparation, creativity, and a deep understanding of the law. Sharing lessons learned in practice helps strengthen not only individual lawyers, but the broader community of defenders working to ensure meaningful and effective representation.
The Witkin Award is a fitting recognition of the office’s investment in making education and mentorship a priority.
Congratulations to the Federal Defenders of San Diego team on this well-deserved honor.
