Former Oklahoma death row prisoner Richard Glossip, 63, was released from incarceration for the first time in nearly 30 years Thursday after posting a $500,000 bond while awaiting retrial for a 1997 homicide case that put him on death row, according to the Associated Press.

“It’s overwhelming, but it’s amazing at the same time,” he told reporters on Thursday afternoon as he walked out of the jail hand-in-hand with his wife.

The U.S. Supreme Court in February 2025 threw out the conviction and death penalty for Glossip, who has maintained his innocence for more than a quarter century, and who came so close to execution that he three times ate what was supposed to be his "last meal."

The Supreme Court ruled hat prosecutors’ decision to allow a key witness to give testimony they knew to be false violated Glossip’s constitutional right to a fair trial.
