The Federal Defender’s Office for Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island, working in collaboration with the Federal Capital Trial Project, will host a regional training on the Fundamentals of Federal Capital Defense on January 15, 2026, in Boston. This is a first of its kind.
The invitation-only program is designed to provide foundational training for attorneys defending federal capital cases and comes at a critical moment, as the Department of Justice continues to prioritize and expanding the use of the death penalty. Attendees will include Federal Defender and CJA panel attorneys and staff from the Districts of Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island.
Response to the training invitation has been overwhelmingly enthusiastic, reflecting both the urgency of the moment and the strong interest in building regional capacity for capital defense. Participants will benefit from the expertise and guidance of nationally recognized leaders from the Capital Trial Project, whose involvement underscores the depth and quality of the program.
The Federal Defender views the January training as the first in a series of regional efforts aimed at strengthening federal capital defense practice across New England.
