After 17 years serving a life sentence for a murder he did not commit, Nicholas Sias is finally free—thanks to Oregon Assistant Federal Defender Susan F. Wilk and the Oregon Innocence Project.
Convicted in a 2009 Beaverton stabbing case, Mr. Sias’s conviction rested on deeply flawed witness testimony. One witness later recanted, saying he had been pressured by law enforcement to give a false statement. Another, facing serious sexual assault allegations himself, conveniently avoided prosecution after testifying.
Ms. Wilk and her team uncovered critical evidence that had been withheld and pursued successive habeas petitions, leading prosecutors to reduce the charge to manslaughter. With time already served beyond the statutory maximum, Mr. Sias was released.
His return home included a deeply personal milestone: a reunion with his daughter, now 19, who had been just two years old at the time of his arrest.
