In tribute to the life, character, and public service of James Earl "Jimmy" Carter Jr., the thirty-ninth President of the United States, and consistent with the President’s declaration of a National Day of Mourning in an executive order, federal courts across the country will close for business on Thursday, January 9, 2025.
Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts also ordered the Supreme Court building to be closed Jan. 9 for the national day of mourning. Pursuant to Supreme Court Rule 30.1, any filings otherwise due will be due on the next business day, Friday, January 10.
President Jimmy Carter died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2024, at age 100 in his hometown of Plains, Georgia. He was the longest-lived president in U.S. history.
