Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco on Wednesday said the Department of Justice will seek harsher penalties for crimes committed with the aid of artificial intelligence, calling the technology a "double-edged sword" that can be exploited by criminals (article available here).

"Going forward, where Department of Justice prosecutors can seek stiffer sentences for offenses made significantly more dangerous by the misuse of AI, they will,"  Monaco said.

If the DOJ concludes that existing enhancements to the sentencing guidelines don't adequately address the harm that comes from the misuse of AI, the Justice Department will push for reforms "to close that gap."
