The United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit has selected Alejandro B. Fernandez to Serve as Federal Public Defender for the District of Vermont.
Mr. Fernandez has served as an Assistant Federal Defender for the Northern District of Georgia since 2023. Before that, he served as an Assistant Federal Defender for the Federal Public Defender of New Mexico from 2016 to 2024. While in New Mexico, he also served as the First Supervisory Assistant. His commitment to serving Defender Nation is further exemplified by his role as faculty member at several Training Division programs.
He previously served as a staff attorney at the Office of the Appellate Defender in New York City from 2014 to 2016, was briefly in private practice from March to July of 2014, and was a staff attorney at The Bronx Defenders from 2010 to 2014. He began his legal career as an E. Barrett Prettyman Fellow at Georgetown University Law Center from 2008 to 2010.
Mr. Fernandez received an L.L.M. from Georgetown University Law Center, a J.D. from New York University School of Law, and a B.A., cum laude, from Harvard University.
He will assume his duties on November 3, 2025.
