Guides, Memos, Checklists & More

  • Criminal e-Discovery: A Pocket Guide for Judges was developed to help judges manage complex e-discovery in federal criminal cases.  The advantages of electronically stored information (ESI, or e-discovery) include speed, efficiency, and quality of information.  To ensure these benefits are realized, judges and lawyers working on federal criminal cases need guidance on how best to address e-discovery issues.  This guide helps judges to ensure that e-discovery moves smoothly, trial deadlines are met, and the parties and courts are able to review and identify critical evidence.

The guide's authors are:

  •  Sean Broderick, National Litigation Support Administrator, Defender Services Office
  • Donna Lee Elm, Federal Defender, Office of the Federal Defender for the Middle District of Florida
  • Andrew D. Goldsmith, Associate Deputy Attorney General & National Criminal Discovery Coordinator, U.S. Department of Justice
  • John Haried, Co-Chair, eDiscovery Working Group-EOUSA, U.S. Department of Justice
  • Kiran Raj, Senior Counsel to the Deputy Attorney General, U.S. Department of Justice

  • Working knowledge of litigation support terminology helps ensure that the type, volume, output, and use of data in a federal criminal case is understood and communicated among all members of the team.  Access a list of Common Litigation Support Terms
