ABOUT US

Pursuant to the Criminal Justice Act (CJA), 18 U.S.C. § 3006A, the law governing the provision of federal criminal defense services to those unable to afford representation, the Office of Defender Services (ODS) of the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, primarily through the ODS Training Branch (ODSTB), provides substantial training and other resource support to Federal Defender Organization (FDO) staff and CJA panel attorneys.

The Training Branch has six principal tasks:

  • Designing and implementing training events for CJA panel attorneys and FDO staff, including assisting with the design and implementation of local training programs.
  • Delivering certain training programs to FDO staff through an interagency agreement with the Federal Judicial Center (FJC) and assisting in the design of those programs.
  • Managing contracts for the planning and implementation of federal death penalty and federal capital habeas corpus training for FDO staff and CJA panel attorneys.
  • Providing advice to attorneys appointed under the CJA on topics involved in representing clients in federal court through our hotline (800-788-9908).
  • Implementing the Supreme Court Advocacy Support Program, which provides assistance to FDO staff and panel attorneys representing CJA-eligible defendants in the United States Supreme Court.
  • Providing publications, training materials and other resources, including those on the Training Branch web site, to FDO staff and CJA panel attorneys.
